Movement Education by Neal Dakmak

Neal teaches movement. The Return Practice came out of years of that work: teaching, training, exploring how people move, and paying attention to what happens when someone is given room to notice for themselves.

He still trains. He still coaches. What grew was the room he leaves for what a person actually feels.

Strength stayed:

For years, strength was a major part of Neal’s life. He trained seriously and competed in strength sports. In the 2010s he owned Dakmak Performance Fitness in Baton Rouge and worked there as head trainer, with people at very different levels, not only competitive athletes.

He was deeply invested in lifting. Later he started listening more closely to his own body, and to the person in front of him. Strength stayed. His understanding of movement got larger.

He did not have to throw strength away to notice more.

More than whether they could do it:

The longer he taught, the less a finished exercise told him. Someone could perform the movement he prescribed and still be having a different experience than the one he could see. He got more interested in what people felt, what they noticed, how they met the environment, what changed when they relaxed, what happened when they were allowed to explore, and what happened when he did not answer everything right away.

He began noticing that effort and pushing were familiar territory, for him and for many of the people he taught. Relaxing could be harder, especially with screens, deadlines, and constant noise in the way.

It added up.

What do you notice?:

Neal still teaches. He still cues. He still steps in when direct coaching is needed. People still train hard.

He also became more interested in setting up a situation where someone could feel the movement and notice something before he decided what it meant. The question he keeps coming back to is a plain one. What do you notice?

Direct coaching is still part of the work. So is leaving room to discover something before the next instruction.

Notice it first:

A lot of what started holding his attention was ordinary. Walking. Feet. The ground. Sand, mud, and dirt. Where tension sits. What happens when someone actually relaxes. Rhythm. Pace. The place they are in.

He has talked about walking on sand, mud, or dirt and meeting simple experiences people had when they were young. For a lot of adults, play has become a lost art. When people are moving and a little less guarded, there is often more room to be curious.

Sometimes the body already has information we’ve stopped paying attention to. Awareness can help bring some of that information back into view.

Notice it first. From there, there is more to choose from.

Not a straight line:

The path from Dakmak Performance to The Return Practice was not a straight line. Significant changes in Neal’s life and work shifted his relationship with movement and with teaching.

Arizona, and a wider room:

He returned to Arizona. The Colorado River and the desert are part of where he lives and moves. Sand, dirt, water, and time outside are part of the work.

Later he taught movement in the community, including with the Colorado River Indian Tribes Special Diabetes Project and Recreation. Adults, older adults, and youth were in those rooms, along with people whose backgrounds did not look like a strength gym. He was looking at a wider question: how this person experienced movement, and what they could notice.

It gathered:

The Return Practice gathered across years of teaching and training, strength, coaching, trying things, watching, working with different people, walking, play, and a change in how he understood his job as an educator. Other people shaped that. He got more interested in leaving room to notice.

The work now:

Today those parts sit together. Strength, walking, balance, feet and ground, exploration, environment, play, awareness, coaching, and room to adapt. The Return Practice is the structure that grew out of that work.

Return to Yourself. Move with Awareness.

EXPERIENCE → NOTICE → DISCOVER → CONNECT → CHOOSE → RETURN ↻

The Cycle is a way of working that came out of the teaching. He still teaches directly.
