Work With Neal

Movement Education by Neal Dakmak

Working with me doesn't mean I already know what you're supposed to discover.

We start with movement and with what's actually happening.

I might coach directly. I might give you a cue, change the load, change the pace, change the environment, or ask you to try something again.

I might also give you a little room before I say anything.

Because sometimes the first question isn't:

How do we fix this?

It's:

What do you notice?

I still coach.

I'm not trying to remove coaching from movement.

I teach. I cue. I demonstrate. I challenge people. Strength and intensity are still part of my work.

When direct instruction makes sense, I use it.

But I don't need to fill every moment with instruction.

Sometimes I want you to feel the movement before I tell you what I see. Sometimes we make one small change and experience it again. Sometimes we push. Sometimes we slow down. Sometimes we explore.

Awareness before intensity doesn't mean awareness instead of intensity.

It means we have more to work with.

There isn't one way in.

We might work with strength.

We might walk.

We might pay attention to your feet and how you meet the ground.

Balance, rhythm, pace, tension, relaxation, different surfaces, equipment, environment, or play might become part of what we're doing.

Those aren't steps everybody has to follow.

They're ways of creating an experience we can learn from.

The work changes depending on the person, the moment, and what we notice.

Your experience matters.

I can see movement from the outside.

You are the one experiencing it from the inside.

Both matter.

My role isn't to make every decision for you or stand back and make you figure everything out alone.

It's to teach, observe, ask questions, offer direction when it's useful, and create enough room for you to begin recognizing things for yourself.

That gives us somewhere to go next.

Experience. Notice. Choose. Return.

The Return Practice gives us a simple structure for that work:

EXPERIENCE → NOTICE → DISCOVER → CONNECT → CHOOSE → RETURN ↻

We don't have to force every experience through the Cycle or decide ahead of time what you're supposed to find.

We can move.

Notice what is there.

Work with what we learn.

And return.

Start with a conversation.

You don't need to know exactly what working together should look like before we talk.

A first conversation is a place to tell me what you're interested in, what you've been doing, and what you're curious about.

I'll tell you how I work.

From there, we can decide whether exploring movement together makes sense.
